energy efficiency
You may not realise it, but a quarter of all carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions come from the energy that is used in homes, and CO2 is one of the major contributors to climate change. The more energy you can save within the home, the less harm that is done to the environment. In addition, you will have a more comfortable home, cheaper heating and electricity bills.
insulation
Improving energy efficiency in your home has many benefits. Measures such as cavity wall and loft insulation, draught proofing, replacing the boiler with a high efficiency condensing model, or community heating will cut your fuel bills. Improving the energy efficiency of your house reduces (fossil) fuel use and is thus a good way to help decrease your carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
insulation
what are the benefits to you?
Houses that are easy to heat and are not full of draughts will not be prone to damp and the associated high costs of repairs. This will save you money.

An average house loses 40% of its heat through loft spaces and walls. This means that improving insulation levels first will provide the largest savings. Home energy ratings (the Government approved Standard Assessment Procedure, SAP) are most easily increased through improving the heating systems.

Savings can also be made without any financial outlay by reducing fuel bills through very simple actions such as turning down the thermostat by a degree, closing curtains at night, turning off lights when leaving a room, not leaving appliances such as televisions on standby and so on. See our energy saving tips.

what can I do?
There are several steps you can take to become more energy efficient:
insulation
save money Loft insulation is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways of improving the energy efficiency of a dwelling. Good ventilation is essential to minimise the risk of condensation and subsequent wood-rot.
save money Hot water tank and pipe insulation is one of the cheapest ways of improving the energy efficiency of dwellings. Hot water jackets typically save more money than they cost to fit in the first year alone. Insulating hot water pipes is also important - especially the ones between the boiler and the hot water cylinder.
save money Cavity wall insulation: more heat is lost through walls than by any other route. For dwellings with cavity walls (generally those built after the early 1930s), cavity wall insulation is the most cost-effective measure after loft insulation. Installation involves a professional installer using specialist equipment to inject insulation material from outside into the cavity by drilling small holes in the wall. It comes with a 25 year guarantee from CIGA, the Cavity Insulation Guarantee Agency.
save money Energy saving light bulbs use advanced electronic technology, which enables them to produce light using a fraction of the electricity that ordinary bulbs use. It also means they last longer than ordinary bulbs - up to 10 times longer. Like ordinary bulbs, energy saving bulbs come in standard bayonet and screw fittings so they should fit most sockets. They are most cost effective in positions where lights are left on for longest.
save money Fitting draught-proofing materials not only saves on fuel, but also cuts down draughts. However, remember that ventilation is vital - without it houses become stale and stuffy and is especially essential if a dwelling has solid fuel fires, gas fires or a boiler with an open flue. Airbricks should be checked for any blockages. Kitchens and bathrooms are usually the rooms needing most ventilation.

grants are available
There are many grants and offers available for cavity wall insulation as part of a government initiative to invest in energy efficiency, and they are not just restricted to the elderly, or those on a low income or benefits.
